Dogs belong to the order "Canidae" of which there are some 34 species ranging from small squat legged dachshund like dogs through to the long legged grey wolf..

Domestication of the dog was probably occuring some 12,000 years ago and most geneticists believe that the present day dog breeds all derived from the grey wolf in various regions of the world. Domestication resulted in a reduction of body size, changes in coat colour and markings, a reduction in brain and cranial size slowly resulting in smaller and less teeth and the development of a more prominent stop ( forehead ) on the skull.

When first domesticated the dog was probably used mainly as a cooperative hunting partner. As farming itself began to develop along with the domestication of other species the usefullness of the dog to man would have increased. Dogs would now be trained to guard crops and wildstock from attacks by wild predators

More recently the selection of dogs based on a huge range of traits such as appearance, temperament, general ability has resulted in the hugely diverse number of dog breeds that we now see

So are you thinking about getting a dog? Bear in mind that most dogs may live for 14+ years so you need to think about your present and potential future lifestyle before considering which breed would be the most appropriate for you.
